The oil and gas industry is desperately looking for workers at all levels. They would prefer experienced workers, but beggars can’t be choosers – many of their most experienced staff are reaching retirement age in the next few years and they need those skills transferred before it is too late. Besides roustabouts, a mudlogger is another entry level oilfield job which leads to better things. Many senior staff on oil rigs started off as mudloggers.

A mudlogger:

connect various sensors to the drilling apparatus and install specialized equipment
collects geological samples of rock cuttings from the oil well (as part of the oil drilling process)
monitor gases coming up out of the wellbore as an indicator of hydrocarbons
prepares and analyses them geologically
writes a report on them
enters the information into the database.

Mudloggers work 12-hour shifts, and there are always 2 of them on an oil rig to ensure 24-hour coverage. The job is strenuous and challenging, especially when you have to install equipment and collect samples while drilling is actively going on. You have to be diligent, because part of your duties includes monitoring the level of dangerous gas which can cause a well blowout.

There is high turnover in this oilfield job. Most mudloggers work for oil services companies – not directly for the major companies like Shell or BP. Larger service companies require you to have a geology degree, and expect you to move up the career ladder quickly. Most mudloggers are young, in their early twenties and single. It is rare to see a middle-aged mudlogger. After 6 months to two years of work, you would ideally gain promotion to data engineer, with more responsibilities. As a data engineer, you will also troubleshoot problems which arise, and maintain and repair sensors as needed. For many mudloggers, the eventual aim is to become the wellsite geologist.

Although a mudlogger is an entry level oilfield job, you will earn at least $50,000 annually. Recent information from the American Association of Petroleum Geologists’ April 2008 meeting showed that graduate students with Masters and PhD degrees were receiving salaries of $80,000 to $110,000. Compare this to $55,000 in 2003.

Another perk of your job is travel. Many oil services companies have operations all over the world. For example, Geoservices has service contracts throughout oil rigs on the North Sea. Their employees get the opportunity to travel throughout northern Europe – Norway, Denmark and Holland – when they are off-duty. Working 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off means that you have plenty of time to explore the countries where you are based.

Some new hires hope to use a mudlogger oilfield job to get hired for bigger things by a major oil company like Exxon. This strategy has mixed success. In the United States, many oil wells are owned by wildcatters, who sell their oil to the oil companies. In the North Sea, too, many subcontractors and service companies are used to operate offshore oil rigs. Typically, companies like Shell have only a token presence on board these offshore oil rigs – the company man. Everyone else works for the contractor.

Right now, geology graduates with advanced degrees are being headhunted even before they graduate. But not everyone can go to graduate school, and not every geology student can score straight A’s to attract a company like Halliburton. If your results are only average, your best chance to get an oilfield job is to use proven oil rig employment placement services.

Jobs In Oil Field: What Are The Top Paying Jobs Today?

On August 26 2008, CNN Money reported that oil drillers are scrambling for workers. Too many years of under-investment in oil rigs and workers alike, coupled with the surge in oil prices over the last few years has led to a major shortage of experienced workers in oil fields at all levels. Noble Corporation, one of the world’s largest offshore drilling companies, has 1500 rig job openings in the next 2 years for their 5 new oil rigs. Every oil company is deploying new oil rigs everywhere from the Gulf of Mexico and the deep water off Brazil to the coasts of Africa and Saudi Arabia to meet today’s increased demand for oil.

Filling the jobs in these offshore oil fields is proving to be a major challenge. Despite sky-high salaries in the range of $50,000 to $80,000 even for new hires, there are not many takers for these offshore jobs. There are several reasons for this reluctance:

Not many people are willing to live in the middle of the ocean on an oil rig Political volatility and armed violence, for example rebels and insurgents in Nigeria and other African nations, potential terrorists in Saudi Arabia. Physical danger from storms like the recent Gustav and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Dangerous accidents like the 1988 Piper Alpha drilling rig in the North Sea – 167 of the 226 men on board died when the oil rig caught fire

Predictably, the highest salaries drawn in oil companies are the executives with titles starting with “C”, like CEO, CFO, etc. Then you have the VPs and top salesmen. But what about jobs and salaries for new hires? Well, in February, The Wall Street Journal reported that new petroleum engineering graduates received starting salaries of $80,000 to $110,000, not including various perks and signing bonuses. This demand is in no danger of peaking anytime soon. Oil companies are hiring petroleum engineering freshman students as summer interns, paying as much as $32.50 an hour. Texas Tech reports its 2008 graduating seniors will receive an average salary of $110,000.

Geologists, too, are in great demand. The American Geologic Institute reports that the average starting salary for a geologist fresh out of school is $81,300, up from $55,000 in 2003. At their April meeting, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists reported that graduate students (Masters and PhD) were receiving salaries of $80,000 to $110,000. The good news for job seekers is that the demand for geologists for is unlikely to be filled anytime soon. The American Geological Institute reports that out of 20,000 geology undergraduates, only 2,800 attain their BSc after 4 years of study. In addition, many of today’s oil industry geologists started work in the 1970s, and will be retiring in the next few years. Taken together, these facts mean that more and more geology vacancies are going to open up in oil companies in the coming decade, with salaries likely to increase further. It seems that, even today, taking up a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology or Geologic Engineering is well worth it. Beefing this up with a Master’s in Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, Structural Geology or Geophysics will almost certainly net you an extra $20,000 or $30,000.

With increasing demand for oil from China and India, as well as continuing demand from the US and Europe to drive the search for more oil, the job vacancies in oil fields and offshore drilling rigs will remain unfilled for some time to come. This is definitely the hot job of the next two decades.

Now thats one big reason right there and thats a quote from an Attorney General stated in a news article I took it word for word from CBSNEWS.com

So how many states have been effected by all this housing mess I would say all 50 states I have friends here in Oregon that have lost 20k to 60k on their home values thats sad and yes if they hold on to it through all this 800 billion dollar bailout maybe they will have a chance to do a loan modification or maybe they havent exceeded that 34% DTI so they can refi into lower rates or get out of that ARM that the greedy loan officer put them in with all the pre-pays. The situation above Countrywide will not charge loan modification fees and will waive prepayment penalties now there’s a start. Next is what about all off the American men and women who lost their jobs because of all the shady practices that were going on and not being regulated “Where’s their bailout Bush?” So now because of all the bad choices the “TAX PAYERS”are to come to their rescue?Why?If we had a loan at the bank currently and wasnt able to pay our minimum payments they would close the account send us to “Collections” and ruining our credit?Just think about it?

Next one is gas prices why did gas just suddenly drop it took years to get to almost $4.00 a gallon here in Oregon and across the nation and now its $1.60 why?Before we were told it was because of the War in Iraq and Oil companies needed to invest in future technologies well we are still in Iraq and at war and the gas price hike helped Chevy,Ford,Chrysler almost go belly up if not file BK this year.Now who wants to buy a gas guzzler and loose that much money in gas plus the payments, insurance,and depreciation.The Senate needs to get off their tooshies and pass a fine line restructuring like Carl Ghosn of Nissan/Renault turned around a almost bankrupt Nissan and look at that company now very profitable.Think of all the job losses and last 100 years of American Heritage if we allow the Big 3 die!

Next is Oregon childsupport system as they have a high unemployment rate for a state so small.If a man or woman in a county has any back childsupport they DA will issue a suspension of the drivers license and if that doesnt get a payment out of you then next is contempt of court and you get arrested and Im not saying they shouldnt take care of their responsiblities.Lets say they is a parent who lost their job didnt have any savings and lost the home they lived in and now they cant pay childsupport(domino effect)so as I wrote up top thats the next action of circumstances for this person who is not having the best of luck so they suspend the drivers license ONE QUESTION how to they get a job to get on his or hers feet and take care of his children?
