Drilling Rig Jobs: Is Earning $100,000 Per Annum Too Good To Be True?

Like anything which involves money, employment and greed, drilling rig jobs is subject to scams. A trick used by fake offshore employment web-sites is to post oilfield job vacancies with very high salaries. How is a job seeker to know if a web-site or job is real or fake? One way is to learn what are the typical rig employment salaries.

Obviously, a job posted on Shell’s web-site is not a scam. Unfortunately, most jobs posted on oil company web-sites tend to be high level executive positions, for example country managers. Most entry level jobs in the oil field are found with oil contractors and oil services companies, who post their jobs through job agencies and third party job web-sites.

You may think that going to a reputable site like Monster will guarantee that the job is real. However, experienced job seekers can tell you that quite a few disreputable job agencies also trawl these large job boards to pick up desperate job seekers. While these are not outright scams, an unwary job seeker could find himself giving up half of his first month’s salary as a fee to some dishonest job agencies.

Here are some rig employment salary statistics from Canada, reported in 2006. This means the data was gathered around 2003-2005:

Toolpusher (who leads the management crew on the oil rig) earns $110,000
Managers (in the head office) earn up to $170,000
Entry level roustabouts earn $55,000
Painters earn $58,000
Mud engineers earn in excess of $70,000
Ditto medics – $70,000
Radio operators – $60,000
Derickman – $65,000
Driller – $85,000
Assistant driller – $70,000
Cooks and bakers – $60,000

So, is $100,000 per year for drilling rig jobs too good to be true? That depends on the position. In February 2008, the Wall Street Journal reported that fresh petroleum engineering graduates can easily earn in excess of $100,000 not including perks and signing bonuses. Compare this to 2003, when the starting salary was $55,000. The same goes for geology graduates, reported the American Association of Petroleum Geologists in April 2008.

As you can see, in just 5 years the salaries for some positions have nearly doubled. Why? Part of the answer lies in the rise of the Indian and Chinese economies, where 2.5 billion people are finally growing in prosperity and need more oil. Another part of the answer lies in too many years of under-investment in oil rigs and workers. Too many of today’s experienced oil rig workers were hired in the 1970s, and will be starting to retire in a few more years, just when many new oil rigs are becoming operational. For example, Noble Corporation is bringing 5 new oil rigs to production in the next 2 years, and will need 1500 vacancies filled.

A medium sized agency specializing in oil employment could have up to 1000 job postings in their database, with maybe 20 new drilling rig jobs offered everyday. Despite salaries which are higher than what you can normally earn in jobs outside the oil field, there is high turnover rate of workers. Life on the oil rigs and oil fields is tough, and many new workers just cannot handle it. This is especially the case for married workers, who find the 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off schedule very difficult on their marriages.

For the next decade, salaries for drilling rig jobs will remain high. In the past century, experience has shown that commodities operate on a 15 to 20 year cycle, so rig employment is unlikely to drop until 2020. This is a good time for new hires to get their foot in the door of the lucrative oil industry.

“where’s My Bailout?”

Now thats one big reason right there and thats a quote from an Attorney General stated in a news article I took it word for word from CBSNEWS.com

So how many states have been effected by all this housing mess I would say all 50 states I have friends here in Oregon that have lost 20k to 60k on their home values thats sad and yes if they hold on to it through all this 800 billion dollar bailout maybe they will have a chance to do a loan modification or maybe they havent exceeded that 34% DTI so they can refi into lower rates or get out of that ARM that the greedy loan officer put them in with all the pre-pays. The situation above Countrywide will not charge loan modification fees and will waive prepayment penalties now there’s a start. Next is what about all off the American men and women who lost their jobs because of all the shady practices that were going on and not being regulated “Where’s their bailout Bush?” So now because of all the bad choices the “TAX PAYERS”are to come to their rescue? Why?If we had a loan at the bank currently and wasnt able to pay our minimum payments they would close the account send us to “Collections” and ruining our credit?Just think about it?

Next one is gas prices why did gas just suddenly drop it took years to get to almost $4.00 a gallon here in Oregon and across the nation and now its $1.60 why? Before we were told it was because of the War in Iraq and Oil companies needed to invest in future technologies well we are still in Iraq and at war and the gas price hike helped Chevy,Ford,Chrysler almost go belly up if not file BK this year. Now who wants to buy a gas guzzler and loose that much money in gas plus the payments, insurance, and depreciation. The Senate needs to get off their tooshies and pass a fine line restructuring like Carl Ghosn of Nissan/Renault turned around a almost bankrupt Nissan and look at that company now very profitable.Think of all the job losses and last 100 years of American Heritage if we allow the Big 3 die!

Next is Oregon childsupport system as they have a high unemployment rate for a state so small. If a man or woman in a county has any back childsupport they DA will issue a suspension of the drivers license and if that doesnt get a payment out of you then next is contempt of court and you get arrested and Im not saying they shouldnt take care of their responsiblities.Lets say they is a parent who lost their job didnt have any savings and lost the home they lived in and now they cant pay childsupport(domino effect)so as I wrote up top thats the next action of circumstances for this person who is not having the best of luck so they suspend the drivers license ONE QUESTION how to they get a job to get on his or hers feet and take care of his children?

“Wheres their BAILOUT?”

Tips On The Offshore Oil Rig Jobs

As you probably know by now, the offshore oil rig jobs imply physical work. Almost all the rig companies on the market try to offer their employees an enjoyable time onboard. Especially as there are accommodation wings that meet 4 or 5 star hotel standards. The result is that, even if the employees are actually living in the middle of the ocean, they are good taken care of, with companies assuring all food, board and laundry expenses, besides the travel and transfer costs.

So, if you decide to get a job at one of the offshore oil rig companies available today, you can choose from a very large range of opportunities. Whether you want to be a Driller, Derrickman, Shakerhand or Mudman, you can surely get a very good job there. People who dream of becoming a Toolpusher, a Floorman or a Roughneck, a Motorman, an Assistant Driller, a Crane Operator, Roustabouts, a Cleaner or a Painter and even a Storekeeper, will also find what they are looking for at an offshore oil rig company. Other jobs that are available there are Mechanic/Electrician, Sub Sea Engineer, Rig Mechanic, Rig Electrician, Rig Welder, Barge Engineer, Ballast Controlman or Watchstander, Captain and Chief Engineer, Rig Medic and Safety Man. You see, the number of possible jobs is higher than you can imagine.

Most offshore oil rig jobs call for a 14 / 21 day rotation, which means that you work for a couple of weeks, then you get three weeks off. Thus, you actually spend a lot of time on holiday every year! And let us look at another enjoyable aspect of such a job! Countries like Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, the United States, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, Mexico, Russia, Norway, China, Canada and the United Kingdom are only few of all the drilling employment and travel opportunities you can get from working in the offshore oil rig industry.

If you agree to wearing safety boots hard hat safety glasses and coveralls, then you have a good chance of feeling good in such a field. Fortunately you get to take off your work gear and eat in the galley. You must also keep a good attitude and be focused on why you wanted to work offshore. Should you be a smoker, there are smoking rooms at various places on a rig where safety matches will be supplied. So, you wont have any reasons to be stressed out!

Today we see a global multi-billion dollar industry impacting to a greater or lesser degree on almost every facet of 21st Century life. As is continually highlighted in the business and mainstream media, the industry plays a critical role in driving the global economy. These systems also require an extensive breadth of expertise applied in an incredible range of jobs across the planet to ensure its continued success. Oil and Gas jobs search offer a huge range of fascinating roles including positions in exploration, drilling and extraction, transportation and storage, mechanical, electrical and project engineering. As the industry is so wide-ranging, the list of different positions available is almost endless; however, some job titles include:

Market researcher (qualitative/quantitative)
Statistician
Systems/business analyst
Trader (equities, FX, futures, bonds)
Training and development officer/manager.

Let’s look in greater detail at a number of these roles.

Geoscientists: Providing the foundation for the discovery of exploitable reserves of natural resources such as oil and gas, a geoscientist interprets geophysical, geochemical and geological data to develop models of the earth’s subsurface. Not only are they involved in the exploration and appraisal of new fields, feasibility studies and field development planning, but also in optimising recovery of the producing field. Job titles such as geophysicist, geochemist and sedimentologist are also used for specialist roles within geoscience.

Engineering geologists: Offer detailed technical analysis and broad scientific site impact assessments. They assess the integrity of natural conditions prior to major construction schemes and advise on necessary procedures and appropriate construction materials.

A Mudlogger (or logging geologist or mudlogging geologist) collects and monitors information from drilling operations, such as drilling data including speed of rotation, rate of penetration, pump rate, cutting rate, mud flow rate.

Production/Operations managers are responsible for efficiency, quality, costing and control of industrial processes. An important part of a Production Managers job is co-ordinating and liaising with other industry professionals such as Construction Engineers, Project Managers and Engineers, Commissioning Professionals, Maintenance, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers as well as Piping and Drilling experts.

The Oil and Gas Industry really is a ‘something for everyone’ type of industry: an immense industry with a vast reach and vast range of opportunities.

The Economic Situation Of The Oil & Gas Industry

The oil and gas industry, including exploration and production, consists of about 7,000 companies who pull in a combined, estimated revenue of around 450 billon. However, the production and associated revenue are fragmented; around 10% of companies generate approximately 60% of this figure. Demand for oil and gas is caused by economic activity, population growth and the need for energy for residential, industrial and transportation uses. The growth of an individual company is determined by the success rate of new finds, as well as the ability to continue to produce from existing sites.

Larger companies have the upper hand, having greater access to capital and the capacity to buy smaller companies or propagate amalgamations. Smaller companies rely on their abilities to focus on and develop expertise in a few geographical areas. In addition, oil and gas competes with other fuel-types, such as coal, nuclear power and hydro-electricity. In addition, other sources of energy are emerging, such as ethanol and bio-diesel and there are other forms of application arriving on the market, such as the new generation of hybrid-electric car.

Oil and gas are found in huge, underground basins that meet certain geological criteria. As well as creating three-dimensional maps of underground structures and using seismic waves to ascertain a site’s potential, exploratory drilling is still a major factor in finding oil and gas. Last year, the number of exploratory drillings that took place exceeded 53,500. Once an area has been designated as having promise, the area is cleared and a drilling rig and crew are brought in to begin the process of extracting the resources that have been found.

Oil and gas jobs generally fall in to one of two categories: upstream and downstream. Upstream jobs are found in the process of obtaining oil and gas from natural resources: drilling jobs are upstream jobs. Other jobs are likely to include those in construction and those involved in production facilities. Not all upstream jobs take place on land; for many, part of the attraction of this industry is its variety. Gas and oil fields are also developed below sea level, such as in the North Sea and the sub-sea sites recently discovered in West Africa. These require specialists to find and extract the resources available.

Downstream jobs involve the transportation of oil and gas in their basic forms, the liquefaction of those substances and their processing. While upstream jobs tend to be comparatively more transitory, being based on exploration and ultimate extraction, it is in the downstream category that gas and oil careers are made; while oil rig jobs, for example, will only last as long as the resource is there, marketing jobs can become life-long opportunities as the team packages the combined products across the globe.

The oil and gas industries are two of the world’s biggest and most profitable enterprises. They employ huge numbers of staff that work in an incredible range of department, from those on the ‘front-line’ to those who design advertising campaigns to those who put it in our vehicles.

How To Avoid Oil And Gas Job Scams

Overseas oil and gas jobs increase daily and continue to spark the interests of the thousands of job seekers currently looking for employment. When there is so much interest in a new line of work, job scams are undoubtedly soon to follow. Some general information to keep in mind when you encounter a possible job scam is to remember that legitimate employers do not usually need your bank account numbers, ask you to sign contracts before you get all of the facts, and they certainly do not need money up front to get you started.

Most of you already know what a job scam is, but for those who don’t, here is an explanation. A job scam is a form of fraud where certain persons or scammers pose as recruiters or as employers in the oil and gas industry to offer really attractive employment opportunities. Subsequently you, the jobseeker, is required to pay them money in advance, usually under the guise of work visas, air travel expenses, and out-of-pocket expenses. Usually, this particular type of job scam form is called Advance Fee Fraud or 419 Fraud.

According to the Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission, you can protect yourself against overseas employment scams by using common sense, and by following a few basic rules.

1. You should ask for references.
2. Check them out in the state the recruiters list as an address.
3. Get everything in writing.
4. Forget about companies or oil and gas job recruiters with no legitimate street address.
5. Be very skeptical of overseas oil and gas employment opportunities that sound “too good to be true.”
6. Never send cash in the mail, and be extremely cautious with firms that require a money order. This could indicate that the firm is attempting to avoid a traceable record of its transactions.
7. Do not be fooled by official-sounding names. Many scam artists operate under names that sound like those of long-standing, reputable firms.
8. Avoid working with firms that require payment in advance.
9. Do not give your credit card or bank account number to telephone solicitors.
10. Read the contract very carefully. Have an attorney look over any documents you are asked to sign.
11. Beware of an agency or recruiter that is unwilling to give you a written contract.
12. Do not hesitate to ask questions. You have a right to know what services to expect and the costs involved.
13. Do not make a hasty decision. Instead, take time to weigh all the pros and cons of the situation. Be wary of demands that “you must act now.”
14. Keep a copy of all agreements you sign, as well as copies of checks you forward to the company.
15. Watch for overly descriptive ‘fraud’ giveaways in job listings. The list includes “package-forwarding,” “money transfers,” “wiring funds,” “eBay,” and “PayPal.” World Privacy Forum researchers also found that the terms “Foreign Agent Agreement” often appears in contracts and emails sent to job seekers.
