I recently read from a roustabout job blog that he spend over 6 months looking and trying to get companies with roustabout vacancies before he finally got hired.

He personally admitted that there is no fun in looking for work in oil and gas field, especially in a roustabout job.

He further recommend to new roustabout job seeker the following job seeking strategies which I have summarized as below for your fast reference:-

1. Start searching from whom you know – relatives, friends, business associates, neighbors who directly or indirectly connected to oil and gas industry.

2. Don’t be overly bothered with the future roustabout job salary because the industrial salary scale isn’t that much of a big difference from one company to another

3. Pay for oil and job placement services. This works well for his cousin who was laid off from oil and gas industry a few years back, and he successfully get himself into the right oil job he desired.

A good oil and gas job placement services specialist will send out your resumes all the potential oil employers over the world from their own advance database services. Within a click, all the potential employers of yours in oil and gas industry will have your resume application as Roustabout.

Oilfield Job: A Mudlogger’s Career Advancement To Data Engineer And Beyond

The oil and gas industry is desperately looking for workers at all levels. They would prefer experienced workers, but beggars can’t be choosers – many of their most experienced staff are reaching retirement age in the next few years and they need those skills transferred before it is too late. Besides roustabouts, a mudlogger is another entry level oilfield job which leads to better things. Many senior staff on oil rigs started off as mudloggers.

A mudlogger:

connect various sensors to the drilling apparatus and install specialized equipment
collects geological samples of rock cuttings from the oil well (as part of the oil drilling process)
monitor gases coming up out of the wellbore as an indicator of hydrocarbons
prepares and analyses them geologically
writes a report on them
enters the information into the database.

Mudloggers work 12-hour shifts, and there are always 2 of them on an oil rig to ensure 24-hour coverage. The job is strenuous and challenging, especially when you have to install equipment and collect samples while drilling is actively going on. You have to be diligent, because part of your duties includes monitoring the level of dangerous gas which can cause a well blowout.

There is high turnover in this oilfield job. Most mudloggers work for oil services companies – not directly for the major companies like Shell or BP. Larger service companies require you to have a geology degree, and expect you to move up the career ladder quickly. Most mudloggers are young, in their early twenties and single. It is rare to see a middle-aged mudlogger. After 6 months to two years of work, you would ideally gain promotion to data engineer, with more responsibilities. As a data engineer, you will also troubleshoot problems which arise, and maintain and repair sensors as needed. For many mudloggers, the eventual aim is to become the wellsite geologist.

Although a mudlogger is an entry level oilfield job, you will earn at least $50,000 annually. Recent information from the American Association of Petroleum Geologists’ April 2008 meeting showed that graduate students with Masters and PhD degrees were receiving salaries of $80,000 to $110,000. Compare this to $55,000 in 2003.

Another perk of your job is travel. Many oil services companies have operations all over the world. For example, Geoservices has service contracts throughout oil rigs on the North Sea. Their employees get the opportunity to travel throughout northern Europe – Norway, Denmark and Holland – when they are off-duty. Working 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off means that you have plenty of time to explore the countries where you are based.

Some new hires hope to use a mudlogger oilfield job to get hired for bigger things by a major oil company like Exxon. This strategy has mixed success. In the United States, many oil wells are owned by wildcatters, who sell their oil to the oil companies. In the North Sea, too, many subcontractors and service companies are used to operate offshore oil rigs. Typically, companies like Shell have only a token presence on board these offshore oil rigs – the company man. Everyone else works for the contractor.

Right now, geology graduates with advanced degrees are being headhunted even before they graduate. But not everyone can go to graduate school, and not every geology student can score straight A’s to attract a company like Halliburton. If your results are only average, your best chance to get an oilfield job is to use proven oil rig employment placement services.

Getting Yourself Hired as An Offshore Roustabout

The true entry-level jobs on an oil rig are Roustabout jobs. The roustabout jobs are normally classified into semi skill or unskilled manual laborer. This position form an indespensible role in any part of the oil rig’s operation. Their working hours are undoubtfully long, working hours can be 12 hours a day, 7 days a week for 2 to 3 weeks at a stretch. And without a doubt they work long, hard hours day after day, in often difficult conditions. High or very low temperatures. Wind. Rain. Snow.

Working as a roustabout is back-breaking and dirty – you do everything from cleaning and painting the oil rig to mixing the drilling mud and even moving supplies and equipment around the oil rig. On the other hand, practically everyone who matters on board the oil rig starts out as a roustabout, so you have no right to complain.

For English-speaking workers, there are three main places which hire people for roustabout jobs – Canada, US and UK. Alberta in Canada is still short of people, so it is easiest to get hired there. As long as you are tough enough and show the right attitude, many companies will be willing to pay for any courses or certifications which are required.

At the moment, it is also fairly easy to get offshore roustabout jobs in the US, especially in the Gulf Coast region. In some places, it is as simple as showing up at the temp agency. As in Canada, many companies badly need workers and are willing to pay for any training and certifications required. As a rough guide, your employer will send you to get your in offshore medical certificate, offshore survival certificate and helicopter underwater escape training certificate before you even set foot on the oil rig. After that will probably be a 2 or 3 week course induction course on your duties aboard the oil rig.

UK residents have it tougher. Most employers want you to show your BOSIET offshore survival training certificate, offshore medical certificate, and what the Brits call a GreenHand course. All told, taking getting all of these could set you back 3500 pounds, depending on where you take these course, and there is no guarantee of a job. The offshore scene there is surprisingly small – you really need to know the right people. Most of the jobs are off Aberdeen, so if you live elsewhere you really do not have a chance at all. For new hires without connections, the ex-armed forces personnel find it easiest to break in. British servicemen have a kind of skills conversion course which helps them get offshore oil jobs. Frankly, UK residents who want to break into the oil industry are better off looking for jobs in Alberta or the US Gulf Coast states.

The demands for roustabout jobs are higher hence the success rate will be comparatively higher. Some of good pointers to remember while applying roustabout jobs are as follows:-

1) Highlight your relevant working experience

Put all relevant working experience involving mechanical and manual work .

Put up relevant training such as Survival training or relevant certificates like BOSIET or HUET certificates,

Undeclared your education achievement if you are university graduate because roustabouts in essential is a Blue-collar worker job. Your potential employer may reject your application upfront for being overqualified. However, basic education achievement like your high school certification should be provided as some oil companies make that as compulsary

So, how much salary can Roustabout earn ?

On average, the salary ranges from $310-$345 per day, or $42,000 to $46,000 per year. Of course, most Roustabout jobs also receive fringe oil job benefits like

- airfare fully fully paid by the oil rig company
- medical insurance
- meals, room and board

Offshore Oil Jobs – Life In The Middle Of The Ocean?

Working in the oil and gas industry requires certain skills and abilities. The responsibility is huge no matter the type of job but the advantages are many. There are various oil jobs on the market, the important thing is to be able to face the challenge.

Having a bachelor’s degree in engineering makes you capable of applying for a high-qualification oil job, meaning oil or gas engineer. The duties of an engineer depend on the nature of the oil job. A drilling engineer is responsible for the process of well drilling and in case something goes wrong he will be penalized. The oil job of a drilling engineer also includes the supervising of the entire process of oil and gas extraction.

When it comes to the drilling operation, a drilling engineer is the one that produces the plans needed, not to mention he is must take all the safety measures necessary. The oil job as an engineer comes with a lot of a good things but also with certain obligations. The man for the job must be extremely professional, be able to work in not such good conditions and make sure that the drilling process goes smooth. His duty is to oversee all the steps involved in the process and anticipate possible problems that may appear. The success of the drilling procedure is one of his main responsibilities.

Among the multitude of oil jobs offered, the one of reservoir engineer requires just as much focus and survival skills. The person capable to do this type of oil job must be a true math wiz and calculate the potential quantities of oil that could be extracted from the reservoir. A reservoir engineer must also come up with the special designs in order to ensure the maximization of the extraction process.

What a person looking for oil jobs needs to understand is that the working hours are not very convenient and that there are some periods of time spent only offshore. Though the work is hard, the schedule is tiresome, the pay is good and this is why oil jobs are in style now. More and more people want to work in this field and they are ready to face whatever difficulties lie ahead.

The oil job of an engineer is not easy or fun. He must be able to handle a crisis, take smart and effective decisions on the spur of the moment and most important to guide a team. One must never forget that oil jobs are all about safety. It is the chief obligation of an engineer, with years of experience in the field that he ensures the safety of his crew and also of the operations. He must raise awareness and draw attention that if certain precautions are not taken, things may go wrong and people might get hurt.

Oil jobs are all about knowing how to cope with the many requirements of a not-so-easy place to work. You, as an engineer, have to protect the materials involved in various actions of oil extraction and also make sure that no damage is done to the surrounding environment. On the other hand, one must never forget that he is responsible for the lives of so many people. The responsibility is enormous and it takes a very special person to handle it.

If you are asking what kind of companies and how many are offering oil jobs, then you should know that there is a wide variety of enterprises and all kind of different jobs available. You can be anything you want, depending on your skills and qualifications. From an engineer to a cleaner or painter, there are all kind of jobs offered in this field. One must be patient and search for the job that suits his needs and preferences.

Remember that employers in this field are looking for hard-working people, ready to face any conditions whatsoever but know that comfort is important especially when one is offshore for weeks. They make sure that their employees are well taken care of, by providing comfy accommodations and other things they may need.

Tips On The Offshore Oil Rig Jobs

As you probably know by now, the offshore oil rig jobs imply physical work. Almost all the rig companies on the market try to offer their employees an enjoyable time onboard. Especially as there are accommodation wings that meet 4 or 5 star hotel standards. The result is that, even if the employees are actually living in the middle of the ocean, they are good taken care of, with companies assuring all food, board and laundry expenses, besides the travel and transfer costs.

So, if you decide to get a job at one of the offshore oil rig companies available today, you can choose from a very large range of opportunities. Whether you want to be a Driller, Derrickman, Shakerhand or Mudman, you can surely get a very good job there. People who dream of becoming a Toolpusher, a Floorman or a Roughneck, a Motorman, an Assistant Driller, a Crane Operator, Roustabouts, a Cleaner or a Painter and even a Storekeeper, will also find what they are looking for at an offshore oil rig company.
Most offshore oil rig jobs call for a 14 / 21 day rotation, which means that you work for a couple of weeks, then you get three weeks off. Thus, you actually spend a lot of time on holiday every year! And let us look at another enjoyable aspect of such a job! Countries like Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, the United States, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, Mexico, Russia, Norway, China, Canada and the United Kingdom are only few of all the drilling employment and travel opportunities you can get from working in the offshore oil rig industry.

If you agree to wearing safety boots hard hat safety glasses and coveralls, then you have a good chance of feeling good in such a field. Fortunately you get to take off your work gear and eat in the galley. You must also keep a good attitude and be focused on why you wanted to work offshore. Should you be a smoker, there are smoking rooms at various places on a rig where safety matches will be supplied. So, you wont have any reasons to be stressed out!
